David Warner has a reputation in the shorter format of the sport. And he showed why on the night that the defending champions Chennai Super Kings were knocked out of the Champions League Twenty20 2011.

The New South Wales defeated the Chennai Super Kings in a match that required the defending champions to bat out of their skins in order to qualify for the Champions League Twenty20 2011 semi finals. If the New South Wales Blues were able to prevail as handsomely as they were, it was because of David Warner who played a career best unbeaten 135 to convincingly swing the outcome in only one possible direction.

What was spectacular from Warner was not only in the fact that he wrote himself into the Champions League Twenty20 history with a century to his name, but also, played the switch hit on more than one occasion with astonishing ease and to telling effect. The fact that Warner is apparently ambidextrous was played out beautifully as he shifted swiftly from being a traditional left hander to a right handed batsman, confounding statistics who would struggle with labeling Warner as a left handed batsman when he seems to be able to play with either hand with the same devastating effect on the opposition.

The Chennai Super Kings needed an outstanding effort but unfortunately found themselves witness to one that did not come from their own camp. With the emphatic defeat and the kind of innings that Warner presented, the Chennai Super Kings have been rendered disgraced after double IPL wins and the Champions League Twenty20 2010 with the expectations of their ardent fans dashed as a result of it. For Mahendra Singh Dhoni in particular, it must seem like as a captain, this is perhaps his toughest phase in his career both as India captain and the Chennai Super Kings captain because unlike the Mumbai Indians team, the Chennai team has been virtually intact barring Tim Southee who injured himself during the Champions League Twenty20 2011 training.
